About the course

Students admitted to the programme are eligible for the award of M.Sc. degree in Biotechnology on successful completion of the course.

The students shall be introduced to the theoretical and practical aspects of the major areas of Biotechnology. The courses offered in the first semester are Remedial Course Introduction to Biotechnology, Mathematics (for Biology students) and Elementary Biology (for Non-Biology students), Biochemistry, Microbiology, Genetics and Molecular Biology, Instrumental Methods of Analysis. The students will study Recombinant DNA Technology, Immunology and Immunotechnology, Cell and Tissue Culture Techniques and Computer and Bioinformatics in the second semester. They shall undertake Biochemical Engineering, Fermentation Technology and Enzyme Technology in third semester. The courses in the fourth semester include Environmental Biotechnology, Biobusiness Management and a special paper. For specialization, the students will opt any one of the areas: Biocatalysis and Biotransformation, Food Biotechnology, Plant Biotechnology and Animal Biotechnology. In addition to the above course work, the students shall undergo training programme in Biotechnology-based industry / research and development organization during winter vacation (after third semester). They are also required to undertake project work in the area of specialization.
