About the course

University of Jammu is the first University of the country to get ISO: 9001-2000 certification.

Students admitted to the programme are, on successful completion of the course, awarded M.Sc. degree in Biotechnology. So far, five batches have graduated from this University and are well placed.

Effective session 2004-05, a revised syllabus, based on the syllabi recommended by the University Grants Commission and the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, has been implemented. The semester wise distribution of courses is: 1st Semester:- Cell Biology, Biomolecules, Microbial Physiology and Genetics, Biophysical Chemistry and Laboratory Course I. 2nd Semester:- Molecular Biology, Macromolecules and Basic Enzymology, Bioprocess Engineering and Technology, Computer Applications & Biostatistics and Laboratory Course II. 3rd Semester:- Genetic Engineering, Biology of Immune System, Plant Biotechnology, Term Paper/Seminar and Laboratory Course III. 4th Semester:- Environmental Biotechnology, Genomics, Functional Genomics and Bioinformatics, Journal Club and Research Project/Dissertation. Besides, the Department also conducts audited courses on Biomathematics and Animal Cell Science and Technology. During the summer intervening the 2nd and 3rd Semesters, the students undergo Summer Training in an Institution/Industry outside the Department/Jammu City. At the end of the 4th Semester the student submits a dissertation based on his/her Research Project which is evaluated by external examiners as is the subsequent oral presentation.

As a result of guidance provided by the Department, in the form of various audited and credited courses more than 80% of the graduated students have qualified National tests, like NET, BET and GATE so far. The University has Centre for Quality Assurance that helps in the proper placement of the students. The placement record of the alumni of this department is excellent as the students have got placement in Institutes of International repute such as IISc, Bangalore, IITs; NII; New Delhi; NCCS Pune; CDRI, Lucknow; NBRI Lucknow; NBRC, Gurgaon etc. The Department has been able to attract extramural funding in the form of major research projects.
