The University Grants Commission (UGC) 2002-03 estimates states that there are 5,57,645 enrollments in various Universities & Colleges in the region, out of which 2,27,846 (40.86%) are women students.
The State Government of Karnataka has alloted Rs. 742 crores in 2006-07 towards the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Scheme as against Rs. 435 crores alloted in 2005-06. 716 new Primary Schools were started and 341 Lower Primary Schools were upgraded during 2006-07. 485 new High Schools began functioning in 2006-07 as against 469 last year. 2,325 schools now offer 8th Standard Education starting 2006-07. 100 new Government Pre University Colleges were stated in 2006-07 as against 130 new PU Colleges in the last 10 years. Further, 273 Private PU Colleges are given permission.
