About the course

Students admitted to the programme are eligible for the award of M.Sc. degree in Biotechnology on successful completion of the course.

M.Sc. Biotechnology is a four-semester (two-year) programme offered by the Department of Studies in Applied Botany, Seed Pathology and Biotechnology, and is recognized by DBT. Students are imparted theoretical and practical training in Principles of Biochemistry, Biochemical Techniques, Biophysics, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Molecular Genetics, Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, Immunology, Microbial Technology, Food and Environmental Biotechnology, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, Plant Biotechnology, Animal Biotechnology and Molecular Plant Pathology. The students are required to give one seminar per semester and have to undertake a project work in the fourth semester. The students will not get any fellowship.

The major thrust areas of the Department include Plant Biotechnology, Cell and Tissue Culture, Molecular Plant Pathology, Cancer Biology, Bioprospecting, and Microbial Technology. The department is having various sponsored research programmes like UGC – SAP – DRS, COSIST, DST-FIST, ICAR, DBT-HRD programmes and DANIDA programmes. In addition, the faculty members are having competitive grants from national and international funding agencies. The Danish International Assistance (DANIDA) has established a Seed Health Center for Asian region at the department. The University is accredited with 5 star status by NAAC.

Excellent infrastructure has been developed at the department including Electron Microscope, Multifunctional Image Analysis System (for autoradiography, fluorescence and chemiluminescence detection) and Internet facilities.
