About the course

Students admitted to the Teaching programme are eligible for the award of M.Sc. degree in Biotechnology on successful completion of the course. The programme is supported by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, New Delhi.

The M.Sc. Biotechnology is a four-semester (two years) teaching programme offered by the Department of Biotechnology, Utkal University. The main thrust areas of the Course are of Cell Biology and Genetics, Biomolecules and Biophysical Chemistry, Microbial Physiology and Genetics, Biotechniques, Molecular Biology, Enzymology and Enzyme Technology, Biology of the Immune System and Computer Applications and Biostatistics which are offered in the first two semesters.

In the later two semesters more specialized and advanced courses i.e., Animal Cell Culture, Genetic Engineering, Plant Biotechnology, Intermediary Metabolism, Environmental and Marine Biotechnology, Bioprocess Engineering and Technology etc. are offered. In addition to above, the students shall have to undertake a research project in the 4th semester with an aim to provide them sufficient experience and proficiency in the methodology of Biological research. Students seminar is also an integral part of the curriculum.

The Department has active interaction for both teaching and research with various Departments of the University and a number of National Institutes in and around Bhubaneswar. The Department is well equipped and established research laboratories and faculty members are actively working on various Biotechnology related projects funded by DBT, DST, ICMR, UGC, CSIR and Ministry of Environment and Forest etc. The Course is taught by the faculty of the Department as well as regular visiting faculty.
