Eligibility Criteria / Entry Requirements

(a) For Open Merit and SC/ ST Candidates
Candidates with bachelor’s degree under 10+2+3 pattern of education in Physical, Biological, Agricultural, Veterinary, and Fishery Sciences, Pharmacy, Engineering Technology, 4-Years BS (Physician Assistant) Course, Medicine (MBBS) or BDS with at least 50% marks.
(b) For Sponsored Candidates
Candidates with bachelor’s degree under 10+2+3 pattern of education in Physical, Biological, Agricultural, Veterinary, and Fishery Sciences, Pharmacy, Engineering Technology, 4-Years BS (Physician Assistant) Course, or Medicine (MBBS) or BDS with at least 55% marks.
Such candidates must have a minimum of two years of full time work experience in a registered firm/company/industry/educational and research institutions/any Government Department of Government Organization in the relevant field in which admission is being sought. The employer in the sponsorship certificate must indicate that the fee will be borne by the sponsoring organization and the candidate will not be withdrawn before the completion of the programme. The fee of the sponsored candidates shall be paid by the sponsoring agency from the company’s bank account.

Mode of Admission

Admissions are through the Combined Entrance Examination - MSc Biotechnology conducted by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi or TU conducted Entrance Examination conducted at Delhi and TU, Patiala Centres.

NRI Candidates

5% seats are reserved for the NRI candidates, i.e., who have passed the qualifying examination or its equivalent from abroad. The candidate must produce passport at the time of counselling.
Eligibility is:
Minimum 60% marks in any recognized Bachelor’s Degree of minimum 3 years duration in any discipline from abroad with Mathematics at 10+2 school level
OR
Minimum 60% marks in any recognized Bachelor’s Degree of minimum 3 years duration in any discipline from abroad with Mathematics as one of the subjects.

Foreign National Candidates

15% seats are reserved for the Foreign National candidates i.e. who have passed the qualifying examination or its equivalent and hold a valid foreign passport. The candidate must produce passport at the time of counselling. Out of these 15% seats, 5% seats are reserved for the children of Indians working in Gulf region.
Eligibility is:
Minimum 60% marks in any recognized Bachelor’s Degree of minimum 3 years duration in any discipline with Mathematics at 10+2 school level
OR
Minimum 60% marks in any recognized Bachelors Degree of minimum 3 years duration in any descipline with Mathematics as one of the subjects.
All FN candidates are required to deposit student visa endorsed to TU. The VISA should be valid for the prescribed duration of the programme.

About the course

Students admitted to the programme are eligible for the award of MSc degree in Biotechnology on successful completion of the Course.

The MSc Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary programme of two years duration. The programme aims at training manpower in the thrust areas of Biotechnology, such as, Agricultural, Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology. Graduates trained in this programme would be exposed to several biotech business opportunities and find openings in fermentation industries, pharmaceutical industries, biopesticide / biofertilizer production industries, agro-biotech industries and R&D laboratories etc. The TIET has a Centre of Relevance and Excellence (CORE) in Agro and Industrial Biotechnology funded under the TIFAC Mission Reach, which offer industry sponsored training programmes and short-term courses leading to Diploma / Certificate in the areas of micropropagation, microbial, fermentation technology and food processing.

Distinguishing strengths of our MSc programme are its synergy with other engineering/technology disciplines and Thapar Centre for Industrial Research & Development (TCIRD). The Department of Biotechnology & Environmental Sciences has well-equipped microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology and tissue culture laboratories.

Courses offered during the programme include Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biostatistics & Bioinformatics, Bio-analytical Techniques, Cell and Molecular Biology, Environmental Biotechnology, Bioprocess Technology, Plant Physiology, Plant Biotechnology and Tissue Culture, Food Processing Technology, Genetic and Metabolic Engineering, Bioreactors & Instrumentation, Entrepreneurship etc. In addition to the course work, the students shall undergo summer training programme in Biotechnology based industry / R & D Institutions. In fourth semester, the students shall undertake research project in one of the thrust areas.
