About the course
Students admitted to the programme are eligible for the award of M.Sc. degree in Marine Biotechnology on successful completion of the course run by Centre of Advanced Study (CAS) in Marine Biology of this University.
The CAS in Marine Biology is a reputed Marine Institute in India which is actively engaged in teaching, research and extension activities with an ideal location and easy access to different biotopes such as, estuary, mangrove, backwaters and coastal waters. It has made rapid strides in various facets of Marine Science. This Centre, the brain child of the Eminent Scientist (Late) Professor RV Seshaiya was started as the field laboratory for the Department of Zoology, Annamalai University in 1957, and was recognized for its outstanding research contribution by the University Grants Commission as the Center of Advanced Study in Marine Biology in 1963 and the Commission continues to extend generous assistance till date through COSIST and SAP.
The Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEn) sponsored ENVIS Programme besides Coastal Biodiversity (East coast of India) is one of our important activities at our Centre. In addition, the DOD sponsored programme on COMAPS and OSTC is also being operated in this Centre. The DST – FIST recognition have also been obtained in the year 2000.
Our institute provides library, browsing Centre, excellent collection of marine museum, marine aquarium, experimental aquaculture ponds, instrumentation centre, sea water circulation plant, and boat with jetty facility.
