Eligibility Criteria / Entry Requirements
Candidates who have passed the UG degree in the following subjects can apply for B.Ed. through distance mode: Tamil, Tamil literature, English, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Applied Physics, Geo-Physics, Bio-Physicis, Electronics, Chemistry, Bio-Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, Botany, Environmental Science, Bio-Technology, Plant -Biology, Zoology, Micro-Biology, History, Geography, Applied Geography, Computer Science, Computer Application and Information Technology.
Post Graduates in Economics, Commerce and Home Science can also apply.
In-Service teachers with 2 years full-time teaching experience in a Nursery / Primary/ Secondary/ Higher Secondary / Matriculation School in Tamil Nadu recognized by the State or Central Government can only apply.
Candidates having a direct UG degree (without +2 qualification) / candidates having a direct Post-Graduate degree (without a UG degree) are not eligible.
The candidates should have passed the UG Degree Examination in the 10+2+3 stream or 11&1&3.
However, after 10th standard, candidates who have undergone 2 years of secondary grade teacher training with U.G. Qualification are also eligible to apply.
Only the teachers in school service are eligible; others who are working in Colleges / ITI’s / Polytechnics are not eligible.
Two years teaching experience of a candidate in a recognized school outside Tamil Nadu shall also apply.
However, such candidates must be in service in a recognized school in Tamil Nadu while applying.
Teaching experience in different schools will be taken into account for two years of service.
There may be a break in the two years of teaching experience.
But, the candidate must be currently working in a recognized School.
Candidates having a UG Degree in Economics/ Sociology / Philosophy / Psychology/ Political Science / Corporate Secretaryship / Commerce / Business Administration are not eligible.
Candidates having a Cross-Major Subject in PG Degree (that is, PG subjects different from UG subjects) are not eligible (For example, candidates with B.A Economics and M.A History).
The medium of instruction that will be followed in the instructional and practical work will be only English. However, the students will be allowed to prepare their assignments, practical records and take the term-end examinations both in English and Tamil.
There are about 3500 Matriculation Schools all over the state and their number is increasing every year. In addition, there is a vast multitude of Nursery and English Medium Primary Schools which employ only untrained graduate teachers.
The recent report of the Committee on Matriculation Schools in Tamil Nadu has revealed that nearly 57% of the teachers working in Matriculation Schools are untrained. The percentage of untrained Post-Graduate teachers is very high (71%) compared to other categories.
Tamil Nadu Open University will soon launch the B.Ed. Programme in Tamil. Right now, it offers the Programme only in English.
Mode of Admission
Based on an Entrance test conducted by the University. The Application forms for the entrance test can be had in person or by post from the University Office / BEd Programme Study Centre / Learning Resource Centre (LRC). Counselling for selected candidates will be conducted after which admission will be given.
